Samuel Watson, Monday, 21 June 2010 Victoria's sailor of the year was announced at Yachting Victoria's Champions and Awards Night
Jono Neate, from Mornington Yacht Club, has won Victorian Sailor of the Year, for the first time, which he adds to his International Contender World Championship in an amazing 2009-2010 sailing season.
Jono has had a very successful last 12 months, finishing 2nd in the International Contender Pre-Worlds in Travemuen-de, Germany, 2nd in the Worlds in Sonderborg, Denmark, 2nd in the Nationals at RQYS, Australia, and 1st in the Worlds at RQYS, Australia.
Jono won Sailor of the Year in front of members of the Victorian sailing and boating community, at Life Saving Victoria, Port Melbourne with the audience enjoying Port Phillip Bay as the backdrop.
Other major individual winners on the night were Andrew Gillies and James Sly winning Youth Sailors of the Year, Jack Graves and Jack Felsenthal (Joint Winners) Junior Sailor of the Year and finally Andy Hunting, Malcolm Botterill and David Haw all were acknowledged for their Services to Yachting.
The Leader Newspaper was presented the Media & Publicity Award for their coverage of the Go Sailing Day. Donna Carton, who wrote a fantastic article on sailing for the first time, was there to collect the award.
The winning clubs on the night were McCrae Yacht Club who won Yachting Australia Training Centre (YATC) of the Year and Albert Sailing Club who won Yacht Club of the Year to round out Yachting Victoria Awards.
Helly Hansen presented vouchers to the Victorian Catamaran, Dinghy, Nav Rally and Trailable Champions to start the night off. The combination of Ronstan CEO Alistair Murray and Yachting Victoria President Graham Cunningham working together throughout the night announcing and presenting awards kept the evening moving.
Although the Keelboats had their awards at the Club Marines Series Presentation Night previously, Alistair acknowledged winners in both the Club Marine Series and the Association Cup, concluding by presenting Rear Commodore of the Royal Yacht of Victoria, Andrew Munro with the Association Cup.
Entertainer Nick Morton wowed guests with his magic of the mind performance, which left many of the audience asking themselves “How did he do it?” It was a shift in the format of the Yachting Victoria Champion and Awards night, which in the past has just focused on awards and has had no entertainment, however now is also a great night for entertainment and social networking.
