Geelong Supports Challenge with “Keeping Cancer at Bay”
Royal Geelong Yacht Club has led the way in giving regional support to “Keeping Cancer at Bay “- a cause adopted by Yachting Victoria as part of the community service programme encouraging clubs and boating organisations to support the wider community.
Strong winds caused the cancellation of the planned Saturday event but still 52 boats turned out on Wednesday 12 March to help raise money for children and families living with cancer.
A record $4176 was raised by asking members to donate a minimum of $10 per head and running raffles and a BBQ.
Local businesses donated to the raffles and RCYC members were fantastic in organising and supporting the event.
A highlight was a visit by some of the children from Royal Childrens Hospital who were being treated for cancer.
It is hoped that other regional Yacht Clubs will follow Geelong’s lead and hold similar events in support of Challenge. Yachting Victoria is able to give assistance to any club wanting to support this very worthwhile cause. For further details contact John Chatham or Diana Liptrot at Yachting Victoria on 9597006.
