Personal Flotation Device (PFD) Review
Marine Safety Victoria are conducting a survey of opinions regarding whether and to what extent occupants of boats should be required to wear PFDs (lifejackets). www.marinesafety.vic.gov.au gives access to a series of documents and we encourage sailors to read them.
Yachting Victoria has tasked its Safe Boating Policy Committee to report on this matter and to prepare a draft position for yachting to respond. So that yachting can have the best impact with its response to MSV we suggest that sailors withhold from responding to the survey until the YV position is clearly established, at which time the support of all Victorian sailors will be sought. Keep an eye on the Yachting Victoria website towards the end of the month.

What is a Yachting Australia Training Centre?
A YATC is a yacht club or commercial sailing school that is accredited by Yachting Australia to offer courses in small boat sailing and racing, yacht cruising, yacht racing and powerboat handling. Yachting Australia oversees the YATC’s ensuring consistent national standards in training. There are certain requirements that have to be adhered to such as the ratio of students to instructors, the number of rescue craft on the water, qualifications of instructors, provision of safety equipment and suitability of craft. For anyone looking to start sailing or learn to drive a powerboat the best place to start is a YATC where you can be assured of quality training.
For information about the nearest YATC, e-mail boating@yachtingvictoria.com.au, or visit http://www.vic.yachting.org.au/db/rte_list.asp
