McKinnon Secondary College Rookies carry weight advantage into Victoria Harbour Schools Teams Racing series

head to head with the other schools in the round robin knock out competition.

McKinnon Secondary College are the rookies amongst twelve Victorian schools invited to compete in the second round of the Victoria Harbour Schools Teams Racing elimination series, that continues at Docklands this weekend (Saturday 15 and Sunday 16th March).

It’s the first sailing team in recent history that McKinnon Secondary College (pictured left) has fielded.

The school’s alternative sports co-ordinator Jon Stevenson says, "We have will have a number of first time sailors who have only been on the water a matter of weeks.

"From the 30 students who attended a meeting earlier this term to scope out interest in the Victoria Harbour Schools Teams Racing, fourteen have committed and paid their way to undertake

four weeks of on water training at Sandringham Yacht Club.

"Whilst McKinnon Secondary might be short on experience, our young team of which some like Massimo Fecht and Decklan O’Reilley are only 13 years olds in year 7, will be much lighter than their year 11 and 12 competitors and this could be a big advantage in the flukey breezes we expect on Victoria Harbour," Mr Stevenson added.

Four weeks ago in the first two days of elimination races, after inflicting two defeats over the more highly fancied Haileybury College, the diminutive three boat team of year 8 to 10 sailors from the Woodleigh School at Baxter took the top points to go straight into the finals.

This weekend teams will vie for a crack at the title of Head of Victoria Harbour next April and the right to represent the Big V at this year’s Australian Schools titles in Sydney next July.

Sponsored by Lend Lease’s Victoria Harbour and the City of Melbourne, the Regatta it is being staged as a series of two day events and is sailing’s equivalent to rowing’s prestigious Head of the River.
