THE countdown is on to the 2009  Victoria Harbour Schools Sailing Series, with the first round of racing kicking off tomorrow, Thursday, February 26 at 10am.

The exciting schools series will take place at Melbourne's Docklands and is sponsored by Victoria Harbour's Lend Lease and the City of Melbourne.

Thursday's event is the first of two qualifying rounds, which will then be followed by a finals series. All will take place at the Docklands. The best 12 schools will compete for the title of Victorian Schools Teams Champions in May.

Yachting Victoria's Schools Sailing Co-ordinator John Middleton said this year's Victoria Harbour Series was set to be the biggest schools regatta in Australia.

``It will be a spectacular event with short, sharp, umpired racing,'' Mr Middleton said.

``Teams racing is a very exciting form of the sport''.

Schools taking part this Thursday are:

  • McKinnon Secondary College
  • Haileybury College
  • St Bede's College
  • Christian College Geelong
  • Mentone Grammar
  • Trinity Grammar
  • Melbourne Grammar
  • Methodist Ladies College
  • Toorak College
  • Mentone Girls Secondary College

Sailing will begin at 10am and finish up around 3pm.
