Thirty – seven trailable yachts turned up at the start line for Melbourne Trailable Yacht Club’s inaugural ‘Four Points of Port Phillip Trailable Yacht Race’ on Sunday 27 May. The race started at 1000hrs in a 10 knot west - south westerly and the fleet enjoyed a fast reach past Point Ormond to the first mark off Green Point, at Brighton. The wind increased and many of the boats soon changed jibs before the windward leg out to Fawkner Beacon with the wind averaging around 15 knots and the odd gust to around 20 knots. A choppy sea tested the fleet and soon spread the boats over a wide area, crossing Port Phillip.

Division 2 & 3 boats enjoyed a fast reach north to Point Gellibrand and the Division 1 fleet continued on the windward work to Point Cook on the western shore of Port Phillip. Flatter water close to the windward mark was welcomed as was the moderating wind. From Point Cook it was a fast run back to Point Gellibrand and then on to the finish off St Kilda.

Making up the Division One fleet of 23 boats were yachts with a Class Based Handicap of 725 and above, including nine Noelex 25s and five Castle 650s. Division Two had ten boats and Division Three (non – spinnaker / cruising) was made of four boats.

Competitor feedback after the race was very positive about the concept of this inaugural event and it is envisaged the event’s success will ensure it becomes one of Victoria’s significant trailable yacht races next season, possibly in late Summer.

Many of the competitors logged GPS tracks with the MTYC to compile into TackTracker’s website and a replay and analysis of the race can be seen on the website: TackTracker

Mark Bulka sailing a Sonata 26 finished first over the line and on handicap in Division One. A Sonata 26 in the Division Three fleet also finished first over the line and on handicap.
