Sean Bly, Monday, 9 July 2012 Anna Philip crowned U17 Girls World Champion
The 2012 Laser Radial Youth World Championships have just concluded at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, and after 6 days of competition, light winds and tricky conditions have been the story of the regatta. A number of YVDS and VIS sailors were competing against 70 other boys and 35 other girls from 18 countries, and have produced some fantastic results, a testament to the hard work of these sailors, and their coaches.
In the girls fleet, VIS athlete Anna Philip sailed an exceptionally consistent regatta, with only one race (her drop) outside the top 12, and four top 5 placings, to finish 5th overall, and be crowned U17 World Champion, well ahead of her nearest age group competitor, and a mere 6 points off the podium. This result follows on from her 10th place at the 4.7 World Championships in Argentina in April. Congratulations Anna!
YVDS athlete Natasha Van Rennes also sailed an exceptional regatta. In her first major regatta following a serious injury that almost ended her Laser Radial career, Natasha finished 12th overall, a result that speaks volumes of her persistence.
In the boys fleet, VIS athlete Jack Felsenthal sailed extremely well to finish 22nd overall. This result also included a win in the final race of Gold Fleet. This result follows on from his 8th place at the 4.7 World Championships in April.
Fellow VIS athlete Tom Vincent finished his Worlds in 6th place in Silver Fleet. This result also included a race win in Silver fleet.
Coming close behind him was YVDS sailor Rhett Gowans, who finished 7th in Silver Fleet.
Fellow YVDS athlete Ben Hartnett placed 15th in Silver fleet, while Josh Brooks-Duncan finished 28th in Silver fleet.
Theses sailors will now rest and recover before gearing up for Queensland Youth Week, running on the 5th-8th July.
A number of fellow YVDS and VIS sailors from other classes will be joining them for this event, and we wish everyone the best of luck for this regatta.
The YVDS would like to congratulate all the sailors involved in this event, a give a big thank you to all the parents, and to the SYC/VIS Coaching Program and its coaches for providing these sailors with the support for this regatta.
